Why the certificate matters more than the flying
I had flown drones for two years before I got certified, and I was a competent pilot by the time I walked into the RPTO. I still learned more in five days than in the preceding two years, because almost none of what the course teaches is stick work.
The certificate is not really a flying qualification. It is a qualification in not putting an aircraft somewhere it should not be, which is the part of this job that actually carries risk.
Eligibility
- Minimum age 18
- Passed Class 10 or equivalent
- Valid government photo identity
- Medical fitness declaration
- Background verification for some categories of work
Choosing an RPTO
There are now DGCA-authorised training organisations in most major Indian cities. Two things separate a good one from a certificate mill.
First, ask how many aircraft they have and how many candidates are in a batch. If the ratio is worse than one aircraft to four candidates, you will spend the practical days watching rather than flying. Second, ask what class of aircraft the practical is flown on. If you intend to work with medium-class aircraft, get certified on medium class – upgrading later means repeating a large part of the course.
What the course covers
Roughly: regulation and airspace, basic aerodynamics and aircraft systems, meteorology, radio telephony and ATC coordination, flight planning, emergency handling, and battery and payload management. Then two to three days of practical.
The meteorology module is the one candidates dismiss and later find most useful. Understanding why the air over a Bengaluru rooftop at 2 PM behaves the way it does is the difference between a stable shot and an aircraft that will not hold position.
The skill test
The practical assessment covers a normal take-off and landing, a defined flight pattern, position hold in wind, an emergency return-to-home, and a manual landing with GPS disabled. That last one is where most failures happen.
If you have only ever flown in GPS mode, you have not really flown. Book ATTI-mode practice time before the test, not after you have failed it.
Cost and duration
Expect ₹45,000 to ₹75,000 for a small-class certificate depending on the city and the organisation, and five to seven days end to end. Medium class runs higher. The certificate is valid for ten years and renewable.
The three common failures
Manual mode landing. Covered above. Practise it.
Airspace questions in the written paper. Candidates memorise the zone colours and then get asked to work out whether a specific coordinate needs permission given a stated airport reference point. Learn to actually read the map.
Emergency procedure sequencing. Knowing that you should return to home is not enough; the assessor wants the order – assess, communicate, execute, log. Rehearse the sequence out loud.
After the certificate
The RPC gets you legally airborne. It does not get you hired. What gets you hired in Indian commercial drone work, in rough order: the ability to produce a clean deliverable on a deadline, the patience to handle clearance paperwork, and a logbook that shows you have flown in conditions worse than a training field on a calm morning.
We hire from RPTOs regularly. The candidates who stand out are not the smoothest pilots. They are the ones who show up with a flight log, an insurance certificate and a question about our safety protocol.
